Can PB Tech Recover Your Data? Questions to Ask Before You Proceed

Computer retailers and repair shops have different recovery capabilities. Ask whether work is in-house, whether the original will be altered and what all fees include.

Whether PB Tech—or any computer retailer or repair shop—can recover your data depends on the device, failure type, local capability and whether the case is referred to another provider. A healthy drive with deleted files is very different from a clicking hard drive, failed SSD, liquid-damaged phone or degraded RAID.

Data Recovery Lab NZ is not affiliated with PB Tech. This article does not state how a particular PB Tech branch handles a particular case; policies and capabilities can change.

Questions to ask any first-line repair provider

  1. Will the work be completed in-house? If not, who receives the device and data?
  2. Will you write to the original drive? Initialising, repairing a file system or reinstalling an operating system can alter evidence and overwrite recoverable data.
  3. Do you image unstable media first? A sector-by-sector image protects the original from repeated logical attempts.
  4. What happens if the drive clicks or has bad heads? Mechanical cases require different facilities and tools from ordinary computer repair.
  5. What will the quote include? Confirm assessment, labour, donor parts, media, courier, reassembly and unsuccessful-case charges.
  6. How are passwords and recovered files handled? Ask about access, retention and secure deletion.
  7. Will I receive the original device and parts back? This matters if you want a second opinion.

When ordinary repair steps are unsafe

Do not approve CHKDSK, Disk Utility First Aid, reformatting, a factory reset, operating-system reinstallation or RAID rebuild when the only copy of the files is at risk. Those actions may be appropriate after a verified backup, but not as a first attempt on irreplaceable data.

Logical recovery versus hardware recovery

Logical recovery may be possible when the storage is stable and the problem involves deletion, a damaged partition or a file system. Hardware recovery can require controlled power, firmware access, donor components, board-level work, clean handling or NAND-specific equipment. Ask which category your device appears to fall into and how that conclusion was reached.

Frequently asked questions

Should I let a shop “try software” first?

Only when the device is stable and the attempt will be made from a proper image rather than directly against failing media.

Is outsourcing automatically bad?

No. Referral can be appropriate when it is transparent, secure and clearly priced. The customer should know who has custody of the device and data.

Can I request the original parts back?

Ask before authorising work and have the requirement recorded in writing.

Need the files rather than the drive repaired?

Stop using the affected storage and describe the symptoms before trying repair software or repeated power cycles. Data Recovery Lab NZ accepts tracked mail-in cases from throughout New Zealand.
