No. Removing a hard drive or SSD from a powered-off computer normally does not erase the information stored on it. The files remain on the storage until they are overwritten, securely erased or the media becomes unreadable.

What removal changes

Removing the drive disconnects it from the computer. It does not automatically delete files, reset the partition table or wipe the operating system. The storage can often be connected to suitable imaging equipment or another system for assessment.

Important exceptions

• Encryption: BitLocker, FileVault and device-level encryption may require a password, recovery key or the original system state.
• Board-integrated storage: Many modern MacBooks, Surface devices, phones and tablets do not have a conventional removable drive.
• Paired hardware: Some encrypted storage is tied to the original logic board, security processor or controller.
