Stop Using a Failing USB Flash Drive
If the data matters, preserve the current condition of the flash drive before trying to repair it.
Avoid:
- formatting the USB drive
- initialising it in Disk Management
- running CHKDSK or other repair utilities on an unstable device
- repeatedly reconnecting a drive that drops offline
- bending or twisting a damaged USB connector
- soldering a broken connector without first inspecting the PCB
- installing recovery software onto the affected USB drive
- copying new data to a corrupted or accidentally formatted flash drive
- opening or sanding monolithic flash devices
If the USB stick has physically broken, keep every piece and do not try to straighten or force the connector back into place.
Can Data Be Recovered From a USB Flash Drive?
Often, but the recovery method depends on what has failed.
A USB flash drive typically contains NAND flash memory, a controller, power and interface circuitry, and firmware that manages how logical data is stored across the flash.
Possible recovery paths can include:
- controlled logical imaging
- connector repair
- PCB repair
- electrical fault diagnosis
- controller-related recovery
- direct NAND access where technically feasible
- reconstruction of data from raw flash content
Some failures are straightforward. Others require detailed work to reconstruct how the controller stored and translated the data.
Recovery cannot be guaranteed for every flash drive, particularly where NAND memory is severely degraded, physically destroyed or protected by unsupported controller behaviour or encryption.
Common USB Flash Drive Failure Symptoms
Common symptoms include:
- USB drive not detected at all
- Windows says the drive must be formatted
- USB device repeatedly connects and disconnects
- the drive appears with the wrong capacity
- the drive appears as 0 bytes
- files cannot be copied
- files are corrupted or missing
- the USB connector is bent or broken
- the connector has snapped completely off
- the PCB is cracked
- the drive becomes unusually hot
- the controller is detected but the NAND is inaccessible
- the device is physically damaged or crushed
- the drive was accidentally formatted
- important files were deleted
USB Flash Drive Not Detected
A USB stick that is not detected can have a fault at several different levels.
Possible causes include:
- damaged USB connector
- broken solder joints
- torn PCB pads or traces
- failed voltage regulation or protection components
- controller failure
- firmware or internal metadata problems
- failed or degraded NAND flash
If the device is physically stable, testing one known-good USB port can be reasonable. If it continues to disappear or gets hot, stop testing it.
A drive that is not detected by Windows does not automatically mean the stored data has been destroyed.
Broken or Snapped USB Stick Data Recovery
Physical connector damage is one of the most common USB flash-drive recovery scenarios.
A flash drive may be damaged when it is:
- knocked while plugged into a computer
- dropped
- bent sideways
- crushed
- pulled from a port at an angle
Damage can range from broken connector solder joints to torn copper pads, cracked traces or damage extending into the controller or NAND area.
A visibly broken USB connector should not automatically be resoldered without inspecting the board first.
If pads or traces have lifted from the PCB, forcing the connector back into place can worsen the damage.
Damaged USB Connector and Torn PCB Pads
When a USB connector separates from the board, the condition of the PCB determines the appropriate repair method.
Possible damage includes:
- broken mechanical anchor points
- lifted signal pads
- torn power pads
- broken data traces
- cracked multilayer PCB sections
Where the controller and NAND remain healthy, restoring temporary electrical communication may allow the device to be imaged.
The objective is data extraction rather than returning the damaged flash drive to normal everyday use.
Corrupted or Unreadable USB Flash Drive
A USB drive may still be detected normally while the file system is damaged or inaccessible.
Symptoms can include:
- Windows asks to format the drive
- the volume appears as RAW
- folders disappear
- filenames become corrupted
- files show incorrect sizes
- copying produces errors
These symptoms can result from logical corruption, unstable NAND or controller-level problems.
If the device is stable enough to image safely, recovery should normally be performed from the image rather than repeatedly scanning the original flash drive.
USB Controller Failure
The controller manages communication between the computer and NAND flash.
It can also manage:
- error correction
- bad-block handling
- wear levelling
- logical-to-physical address translation
- data scrambling
- internal metadata
- sometimes encryption
If the controller fails, the raw NAND may still contain data, but the logical structure presented to the computer may no longer be available.
This is one reason that directly reading a NAND chip does not necessarily produce usable files immediately.
NAND Flash Failure
NAND flash memory has a finite endurance and can develop increasing bit errors over time.
Controllers use error-correction mechanisms to compensate for this during normal operation.
As NAND deteriorates, a USB drive may:
- become slow
- disconnect intermittently
- produce read errors
- show corrupted files
- stop initialising normally
Severe flash degradation can make some areas unreadable even when other parts remain accessible.
The amount of recoverable data depends on the condition of the underlying NAND and the ability to reconstruct the controller’s mapping and transformation processes.
Direct NAND Flash Recovery
Some USB flash-drive failures can require direct access to the NAND memory rather than communication through the original controller.
This can involve reading the raw flash content and reconstructing the way the controller originally organised it.
Raw NAND data may need to be processed for:
- page and block structure
- error correction
- bad blocks
- interleaving
- wear levelling
- data scrambling
- logical block mapping
Direct NAND access is not universally possible or appropriate. Controller encryption, unsupported transformations, severe flash degradation or physical destruction can prevent successful reconstruction.
A so-called “chip-off” read is therefore not automatically a complete recovery.
Monolithic USB Flash Drive Recovery
Some modern USB sticks use a monolithic design where the controller, NAND and electrical connections are integrated into a single package rather than mounted as separate chips on a conventional PCB.
These devices may have no exposed NAND package that can simply be removed and placed into a reader.
Recovery can require access to tiny internal test points or other specialised methods, depending on the design.
Monolithic devices should not be sanded, drilled or opened casually. Damage to internal traces or bond structures can permanently reduce the chance of recovery.
USB Drive Shows the Wrong Capacity
A flash drive that suddenly reports an incorrect size, 0 bytes or another abnormal capacity may have a controller, firmware or NAND-related problem.
Do not format or repartition the drive in an attempt to restore its normal capacity when the existing data matters.
The incorrect size can be a symptom of a deeper failure rather than a simple partition problem.
Deleted USB Flash Drive Data Recovery
Accidentally deleted files may be recoverable when their original data has not been overwritten or otherwise discarded by the device.
If important files have been deleted:
- stop using the USB drive
- do not copy anything new onto it
- do not install recovery software onto the same drive
- do not format it
Every new write can overwrite storage that previously belonged to deleted files.
Recovery depends on the file system, controller behaviour and what has happened since deletion.
Formatted USB Flash Drive Recovery
A formatted USB drive may still contain recoverable information depending on the type of format and subsequent use.
A quick format generally changes file-system structures without necessarily overwriting every previous data sector immediately.
A full overwrite or secure erase is very different.
If a flash drive was accidentally formatted, disconnect it and avoid writing anything further to it.
Encrypted USB Flash Drives
Some USB devices use software encryption, BitLocker To Go or hardware-based encryption.
Recovering the underlying storage does not automatically bypass encryption.
The correct password, recovery key or other required credentials may still be necessary after the data has been extracted successfully.
At enquiry stage, tell us whether the drive was encrypted and whether the credentials are available.
Do not send passwords or recovery keys through the public enquiry form.
USB Flash Drive Repair vs Data Recovery
Repairing a USB stick for continued reuse and recovering data from it are different objectives.
When the data is important, the goal is normally to make the device stable enough to obtain an image or extract the required files.
A flash drive that required:
- connector repair
- PCB repair
- controller-level intervention
- direct NAND recovery
should not be trusted again as normal primary storage.
After successful recovery, replace the damaged USB drive.
Can I Fix a Broken USB Stick Myself?
Simple connector damage can look easier to repair than it really is.
If the board and solder pads are intact, connector repair may be relatively straightforward for somebody experienced in microsoldering.
However, if the pads have lifted, traces have torn, the PCB is cracked or the controller is damaged, further work can make the recovery more difficult.
If the files are irreplaceable, avoid experimenting on the original device.

Can data be recovered from a broken USB stick?
Often, depending on the extent of the damage. If the connector or PCB is damaged but the controller and NAND remain usable, temporary electrical repair may allow the device to be imaged.
Can you recover a USB stick with the connector snapped off?
Potentially. Recovery depends on whether the PCB pads, traces, controller and NAND were also damaged when the connector broke.
Can data be recovered from a USB drive that is not detected?
Potentially. Lack of detection can result from connector, PCB, electrical, controller, firmware or NAND failure. It does not automatically mean the data has been destroyed.
Can you recover a corrupted flash drive?

Why does Windows want to format my USB drive?
This often means Windows cannot recognise a usable file system. Do not format it if the existing files are important.

Can deleted files be recovered from a USB stick?
Sometimes, provided the storage containing the deleted files has not been overwritten or otherwise made inaccessible by the controller.
What is NAND recovery?
NAND recovery involves accessing the underlying flash memory rather than relying on normal communication through the USB controller. Raw data may then require error correction, descrambling and logical reconstruction.
What is a monolithic USB flash drive?
A monolithic USB device integrates much of the controller, NAND and electrical structure into a single package rather than using separate conventional chips on a PCB.
Can every USB stick be recovered with chip-off?
No. Direct NAND access is not universally possible and does not automatically produce usable files. Controller-specific mapping, scrambling, error correction and encryption may still need to be reconstructed.
Can I solder a broken USB connector back on?
Possibly, if the connector is the only fault and the PCB pads and traces are intact. If the data is irreplaceable, avoid experimenting because damaged pads or traces can make recovery more difficult.
My USB stick gets hot. Should I keep trying it?
No. Unusual heating can indicate an electrical or controller fault. Disconnect the device and avoid repeated power cycles.
Why does my flash drive show 0 bytes?
Incorrect capacity can result from controller, firmware, NAND or logical problems. Do not format or repartition it when the existing data matters.
Can you recover a pen drive?
Yes. Pen drive, USB stick, thumb drive and USB flash drive are different common names for the same general class of device.
Can you recover an encrypted USB drive?
Potentially, but the correct password, BitLocker recovery key or other required credentials may still be necessary after the storage has been recovered.
Should I run CHKDSK on a corrupted USB drive?
Not as the first step when the data is important. CHKDSK modifies file-system structures and should not be run blindly against an unstable or un-imaged source device.
Should I use data recovery software?
Software can be appropriate for some stable logical cases. Do not repeatedly scan a USB stick that disconnects, becomes hot or produces hardware errors, and never install the recovery software onto the affected drive.
